Nasi Lemak

Blk 6 Tanjong Pagar Plaza #02-40
Opening Hours: 6am to 2pm; closed on Sundays & Public Holidays

One of the tastiest nasi lemak I’ve ever tasted can be found in this stall at Tanjong Pagar. It’s managed by an old couple. For S$2, you can get the fragrant nasi lemak rice, egg, otah, chicken wing & kuning. Plus a delicious dolop of chilli.

Lotus Thai Viet

They are all outlets at food courts of this restaurant called Lotus Thai Restaurant. What I do recommend here is their good value for money pineapple rice (only S$4 for a portion) & their mango salad (S$3.50).

You can also opt for their pineapple set (for S$6) which comes with the normal portion of the pineapple fried rice, a small dish of mango salad and a bowl of tom yam soup. I find the tom yam soup (clear one) not that spicy. They do place a bowl of their chilli padi, normal cut red chillies and chilli powder outside their stalls so you can help yourself.

I’m disappointed by their olive rice though. It doesn’t really give a tasty flavor, so I would avoid it if I were you.

  • If you have the kopitiam card, you get 10% discount.
  • Add $0.20 for take-aways.

Niu Che Shui (Chinatown) Glutinous Rice

#01-155 Chinatown Temporary Market & Food Centre
Tel: 9660 3179
Opening Hours: 6.30am to 11.30am, closed on Thursdays

Although too much glutinous rice can cause indigestion to many, it’s worth joining the perpetual queue and get your hands on both varieties – eat the savoury first and have the sweet one as dessert. They sprinkle a spoon of crispy fried shallots which gives the soft dish an extra nice texture and taste.

Cost of each portion is S$1 per plate; you can ask for a mix of both savoury and sweet which will also cost you S$1.

Allauddin's Briyani

Blk 665, Buffalo Road, #01-297
Tekka Market Food Centre
Opening Hours: 10am to 6pm daily

This is the most famous nasi briyani stall in Tekka Market. The grains are quite dry, but not as loose (stirring and pre-fluffing in the pot helps).

The nasi (rice) has a tad more flavour (some may call it saltier) and the mutton is grainy and quite soft, but a little dry and gamey.

The queue at peak hours is at least 20 minutes but it moves fast as the server is precise and methodic.

He slaps some nasi on a styrofoam plate, lowers a piece of mutton onto it, covers it with more nasi, pushes you a bowl of thick but not-too-spicy dulcha curry (as how most of his Chinese customers like it) and you’re down by $3.50.

I’m not a briyani person but this is one of the best briyani I’ve ever tasted. It’s a little bit dry, so pour the curry over the nasi for a better taste.

Golden Mile Claypot Rice

#01-65 Golden Mile Food Centre
Tel: 6295 8234
Opening Hours: 5 to 10pm, closed on Wednesdays

“45 minutes, can wait?” asks the woman taking the order here, in a tone that suggests that if you cannot, it is okay as there are many others willing to do so. The chicken is tender and well-marinated, but the rice is not flavourful, despite the substantial black soya sauce and oil added to it. The salted fish, pork and liver sausage and the cursory sprinkling of vegetables, which top the rice, are above average. For a $4 serving, it is value for money with seven pieces of tasty chicken. You can call in advance to order – at least 40 minutes, advises the stall. Tip: Take care not to stain the table with black soya sauce or the woman will tell you off.
